Hi! I’m Stephanie Phillips with expertvillage.com, we are going to talk about insurance. There are so many kinds when you are traveling. The important thing is to make sure you are covered just in case. Now if you are talking about medical insurance the first thing you have to do is to call whatever the carrier is that you currently get insurance from, see if you are going to be covered for medical needs being addressed when you are going somewhere else in the world. Is your medical coverage going to cover you? Other types of insurance would be: do you need to have insurance in case you cancel. Be very careful some insurance, premiums that you have to pay cover for cancellation for any reason, some only cover for cancellation for medical reasons.

You get this kind of insurance, well any kind of insurance, if you buy insurance for travelling, this type of insurance or a type like it will cover you for things like baggage, medical, transportation if you need transportation, let’s say, for instance, you become very ill and you need transportation to a hospital, you need to be brought back to the United States, it can get very, very expensive. My own sister-in-law paid insurance just to go to Alaska to cover just in case. She had a heart attack during the trip, the insurance covered her for everything: her medical transportation, she got reimbursed for the part of the trip she didn’t use and it covered for her medical expenses while she was there.

They call it gambling. I wouldn’t gamble with just in case it might not happen. Be prepared, cover yourself. Make sure you are taken care of.

Tips:

When you are planning a trip to another country, you most likely have a great deal on your mind. You will be thinking of the excitement of your trip, especially if you are travelling for leisure, and you will be planning all of the fun things that you want to do. You will also be thinking of all the packing your need to do, how many outfits to carry, what luggage will work best, and what toiletries you cannot forget. In addition, you most likely remembered that you would have to get your passport.

However, there is one thing that you most likely have not thought of. This thing, however, can be so important that it could even affect your health. I am speaking of international medical insurance. There are specific policies to make sure your healthcare needs will be properly met should you fall ill or suffer an accident while you are out of the country. When you get ready to choose the insurance you will need for your travels, you could definitely use some advice.

Below, you will find four tips to choosing the right insurance coverage for your trip. By following these tips, you will be able to choose the right policy for your needs.

1. Do your research. Of course, this is good advice for anything that you will be purchasing, insurance or otherwise. However, research takes on a special role with this type of coverage. Because most standard medical policies do include a small amount of coverage, you will need to make sure you know what you already have.

You can easily find this information with a quick phone call. All you will need to do is ask your insurance agent or consult your policy documents to determine what coverage you already have. Chances are, the medical coverage included in your health policy will not be totally adequate, and you will need to choose a further international medical insurance policy.

2. The next thing you will need to do is gather the details of your trip and begin to compare policies. These types of coverages will cost a certain amount based on the length of the trip. This premium amount may be figured as a percentage of the time you will be on the vacation or they may be figured based on the cost of your trip. In either case, to be able to compare the policies, you will need to be able to provide the details of your trip.

3. You will have to determine which of the four types of international travel insurance policies will work correctly with your needs and your trip. These four policies include short-term coverage, long-term coverage, expatriate policies, and foreign national insurances.

Short-term insurance is made to cover a single trip that will only last a few weeks and does not include a large number of international stops. This type of coverage is perfect for vacations or one-time business trips.

Long-term policies cover two different types of coverages. This type of insurance is perfect for you if your trip will last for up to a year, providing the medical insurance you will need in this situation. In addition, if you will be on a trip that includes multiple international stops, like stops in more than one country, this will be the right coverage for you.

Expatriate policies are made to cover a specific instance, which is when you will actually be living in another country. Finally, if you live in the country, but you are not a citizen of the country, you can choose medical insurance called foreign national policies.

4. Once you have chosen your policy type, you will be ready to choose your coverage. You will want to consider what type of deductible you wish to pay for and the amount of coverage you would like. These decisions can affect the insurance premium, but can be quite helpful if you need to make a claim.

When you are planning a trip, it is easy to overlook many things that you will need for your travels. One of the things that you could forget about is international travel medical insurance, but it is an important thing to consider. If you follow the above four tips, you will easily be able to choose the right coverage for you.

Expert Article:

International medical insurance is generally purchased as a supplemental policy.  Often, it holds no coverage power inside of your home country.  Instead, it focuses on providing you with health coverage which you are traveling, studying, or living abroad.

Depending on the purpose for buying the international medicine insurance policy, coverage may be every bit as extensive as a domestic health plan, or it may be limited to emergency medical situations only.   It can be a stand alone medical policy, or it can be bundled in with another travel insurance plan.  Variability and flexibility for travelers is a key component of international medicine insurance.

Though some mainline insurance carriers do offer international medicine plans, most of the international medicine insurance sold is provided by specially dedicated companies.  These firms may be associated with travelers groups or they can be independent.  Some only operate regionally, so shop around for coverage to be aware of all of your options and to compare plans effectively.

Information Needed For An International Medicine Insurance Quote

Though they are modeled on traditional health plans, the underwriting for international medicine insurance plans can be quite different.  In some cases it will be more in depth, while in others the process will be much more streamlined.  It depends quite a bit on what you want the policy to be able to do and how long you will be out of your country of origin.

In general, you will be asked to provide your basic medical history and your travel itinerary.  Each country on your stop will be evaluated, along with any pre-existing conditions you may have.  If you plan to participate in extreme sports or hazardous leisure pursuits, you should also make this clear to your plan provider to ensure coverage for injuries sustained in those activities.

Common International Medicine Insurance Policy Features

International medicine insurance contains many of the same features as a domestic medical plan for your health and well being.  In general, most international medicine policies include:

- Emergency medical evacuation.  If you are deeply ill or have sustained an injury which can not be treated in the current country, your insurance plan will cover the cost of medical evacuation to an established health center in another country or back to your home country.

- Hospital stays.  If you require hospitalization during your travels, your international medicine plan should cover rooms, lab work, and x-rays on your behalf.

- Doctor’s visits.  If you fall sick or are injured and go to the doctor, you should be covered under your international medicine plan for the cost of the consultation and any lab work or medicines needed.

- Acts of terrorism.  This is a newer addition to many plans, but it covers injuries and relocation costs that result as an after effect of an act of terrorism.

International Medicine Insurance Discounts Available

In general, international medicine discounts are available by being a member of a travel association or bundling with others.  Family plans, for example, may be cheaper than individual plans due to the bundling effect.  Many travelers groups also offer discounted rates to members on international medicine insurance, though the fine print should be read carefully.

International Medicine Insurance Exclusions To Note

Like other forms of health insurance, international medicine insurance does come with its own exclusions to be aware of as you plan for travel and care.  These exclusions may be based on your own health, your destination, or your length of stay.

Your own health is a factor.  If you have pre-existing conditions, including pregnancy, you may find that those conditions are not covered under the policy.  In some cases, these conditions will be covered after 12 months.

Your destination is a factor.  Known danger zones may be excluded, as may regionally common disasters and ailments.  Read the fine print carefully and talk with underwriters to be sure you understand what is covered and what is excluded.

Finally, your length of stay may lead to exclusions.  While there are long term policies available, shorter stay policies may come with limits.  You do not want to be abroad with a policy you can’t renew, so shop carefully as you purchase your international medicine plans.
